How Snow Plows Can Damage Asphalt (and How to Minimize It)

Snow removal is essential in Ontario winters — but it can also be one of asphalt's biggest threats. Whether it's a commercial parking lot or a home driveway, improper plowing can cause significant and costly damage over the winter season.

Edge Damage

Snowplow blades that scrape too close to the asphalt edge can chip or crumble it, especially on older or unsealed surfaces. Place reflective driveway markers along edges and curbs so plow operators know where the pavement ends.

Surface Scraping

Metal blades can remove more than snow — they can strip away your sealcoat and create gouges in the asphalt. Use rubber or polyurethane-tipped plow blades and ensure operators maintain proper blade height.

Catch Basin and Curb Damage

Plows that hit raised curbs or manhole covers can crack the surrounding asphalt and damage drainage systems. Clearly mark drainage areas and avoid stacking heavy snow against curbs or entrances.

Overloaded Snow Piles

Piling snow in one spot can cause pressure damage, poor drainage, and surface deformation when it melts. Distribute snow evenly and push piles to designated areas away from main traffic zones.

Contractor Miscommunication

Sometimes damage happens simply because the plow operator wasn't informed about existing cracks, dips, or hazards. Walk the property with your plow contractor before the first snowfall. Point out vulnerable areas and review proper routes and techniques.

Your plow operator and your asphalt maintenance team should be on the same page. Before winter, Lawns & Lanes can inspect your lot or driveway, fill cracks, and prepare your surface to minimize damage during plowing season. Contact us today to schedule a pre-winter inspection.
