What Happens If You Don't Seal Your Driveway Before Winter?
You meant to get your driveway sealed this year. You noticed the cracks, saw the fading, and even looked up a few contractors. But now it's fall, and you're wondering: can I wait until spring? From experience, waiting can cost you a lot more in the long run.
1. Cracks Expand and Multiply
Even the smallest hairline crack will get worse in winter. Water gets into the crack, temperatures drop, water freezes and expands, pushing the crack wider. The cycle repeats all winter long. By spring, what was once a minor surface flaw could be a deep structural issue.
2. Salt and De-Icer Eat Away at the Surface
Salt-based de-icing products weaken the surface layer, cause early erosion, expose the base layer faster, and accelerate fading and brittleness. Sealed driveways have a protective barrier that repels moisture and chemicals. Unsealed driveways absorb everything and degrade much faster.
3. Snowplows Can Tear Up the Edges
Plow blades can catch on uneven, cracked, or weakened asphalt edges. This results in chipped corners, dislodged chunks, and accelerated edge erosion. A fresh sealcoat smooths the surface and strengthens edges, making them more resistant to plow damage.
4. Poor Drainage Gets Worse
If your asphalt has low spots, cracks, or uneven patches, water from melting snow will pool and seep in, causing base layer saturation, freeze-thaw damage, and soft spots that collapse under vehicle pressure. Fixing these in the spring costs significantly more than sealing and patching now.
5. You Could Be Facing Major Repairs by Spring
Crack filling in fall costs $200–$400. Sealcoating costs $300–$600. Waiting until spring means pothole repair at $500+, resurfacing at $2,000–$5,000, or full driveway replacement in worst-case scenarios at $5,000–$10,000+.
Sealing requires dry weather, no rain in the forecast for 24 hours, and temperatures above 10°C. In most parts of Ontario, that means you've got a few weeks left. Contact Lawns & Lanes today for your free quote before the sealing season ends.
